Will Apple remove the SIM slot on the iPhone 14?

Leaked sources say that the iPhone 14 in some markets will only support eSIM.

A source from the Wall Street Journal said that Apple may release an eSIM-only version of the iPhone 14 in some markets. The move is intended to test whether consumers are willing to use a phone without a physical SIM slot.

Apple is said to have sent notices to several major carriers in the US to prepare for the launch of iPhone models using only eSIM.

"It's a natural evolution. It's going to make the user experience better," said Jeff Howard, AT&T's vice president of mobile devices and accessories.

Apple first introduced eSIM technology on the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max in 2018. With an eSIM, users can activate a cellular service plan without going through any physical SIM cards.

Besides, the removal of the physical SIM slot also helps smartphone manufacturers to optimize more space inside the phone for many other components. In addition, this is also considered a solution to increase security.

"We can send security updates to millions of users globally when we discover an issue. This is something you can't do with a physical SIM," said Anthony Goonetilleke, technology group president and lead Amdocs strategy division, share.

Leaked sources say that the iPhone 14 generation will have 4 different versions, including iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The device is expected to launch on September 13.
