According to the latest report from market research firm Counterpoint Research, the number of smartwatches shipped in the first quarter of 2022 was 13% more than the same period last year, despite concerns about the economic recession and inflationary.

Apple continues to maintain its leading position in the market with 36.1% market share. Compared to the first quarter of 2021, the company's shipments increased by 14%. This is thanks to the success of the Apple Watch 7 product line.


"In 2020, the global smartwatch market saw little growth due to the Covid-19 epidemic. However, the market quickly recovered and grew again. Apple accounted for more than a third of the total smartwatch market. shipped last year and continued to hold its position when it took 36% of the market share in the first quarter of this year," said Sujeong Lim, an expert at Counterpoint Research.


Lim also added that user loyalty to the iPhone is one of the key factors for the success of the Apple Watch. The level of loyalty is increasing among the younger generation, making Apple an irreplaceable leader in the market.


"This success also comes from the product's high performance and excellent connectivity between iOS devices. We believe Apple's market share is likely to continue to grow later this year," Lim said.


In second place is Samsung with 10.1% market share. With the popularity of the Galaxy Watch 4 series, the number of smartwatches that the Korean tech giant has shipped has increased by 46% compared to the same period last year.


The next positions belong to Huawei with 7.2% market share, Xiaomi with 5% market share, Garmin with 4.3%, Amazfit with 4%, imoo and Fitbit with 3.4% and 2, respectively. 7% market share.

According to Counterpoint Research, while most regions of the world grew, only the European market recorded flat growth. Although Apple and Samsung have continued to grow year after year, other brands like Garmin and Fitbit are underperforming in Europe during this period.


“Initially, we expected that the Russia-Ukraine conflict would only affect the market in the first quarter. However, the escalating situation is increasingly affecting other countries in Europe. The impact of the conflict may become more severe in the second quarter," Lim said.
